Summary

Now when the LORD descended in a cloud on Mount Sinai to write the Ten Commandments in stone a second time, He proclaimed His Name saying: “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:1-6). The character of the LORD is gracious. In 1 Samuel, Hannah who could bear no children was tormented by the constant taunts and provocations of others (1 Samuel 1:1-8). When she cried to the LORD, He answered her in the multitude of His mercies and grace, and delivered her from all her distress (1 Samuel 1:9-18). The LORD in His steadfast love and faithfulness blessed a once barren Hannah to give birth to a son named Samuel who would become a great prophet for the purposes of God (1 Samuel 1:19-20). King David spoke of the LORD’s goodness in this manner: “Then I called on the name of the LORD: ‘O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!’ Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful. The LORD preserves the simple; when I was brought low, He saved me” (Psalm 116:4-6).
